While Gangstagrass have a new single out and are preparing a live album, they released their last studio album American Music almost three years ago. Never the less, their mix of Bluegrass and Hip-Hop hasn’t lost its freshness a bit in those years.

There might be millions of musicians out there who write beats for Hip-Hop artists. But, at least as far as I know, there is only one Country Rap band, the Gangstagrass, the bluegrass-hip-hop project of Brooklyn based producer Rench.
Bands like Turvy Organ put all of their music on SoundCloud for free streaming without limits (no 30-second previews like others). Why do they do it, when there are no direct revenues for most artists on that platform?

While our artist of the week, Denver’s own Turvy Organ are actually in the studio to record their new album, we still have their fantastic debut The Soft Light to enjoy.

This week’s featured artist is the Denver based band Turvy Organ. They declare themselves being mostly influenced by Conor Oberst and the Bright Eyes. But it is undeniable, that their roots go back to the British Indie-Pop of the 80s. Bands like Echo & the Bunnymen, Edwyn Collins’ Scritti Politti and the Pastells come to mind quickly.

This is the last post in a series of seven about this week’s featured artist Kris Angelis from Los Angeles. Apart from her debut album and two EPs, she has released quite a few singles in the past years. They are all very different, but nonetheless, typically Kris and worth a listen.

Our artist of the week Kris Angelis has a clear view what songwriting means to her: “There’s a Victor Hugo quote that expresses exactly how I feel about it: ‘Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.’ That’s how songwriting has been for me.” And she indeed hasn’t been silent lately.
