After my previous album, Creatures In The Garden, I didn’t think I had another one in me. But suddenly this chorus just popped out, lyrics, chords, and melody all at once, “We will all come out together for love, love, love.” And I really needed to hear these hopeful words, because of the daily barrage of sad news. It was enough to start me off on my next album journey.
Listen to the songs while reading the text.
Writing the rest of the song proved to be quite challenging. The chorus could not find a verse chord progression that really could set it up. But I wanted the chords to feel like American folk with a back beat, something everyone could relate to. Simple, straightforward, hopeful. Sort of in the vein of Neil Young circa 1972. Some folks also hear a Cat Stevens influence, circa the ’70s, in there. To which I say…no doubt.
Lyrically, I had no idea what the context for these lyrics would be. At that moment and still today, I see the U.S. struggling with the United part of United States. Because of that, I was drawn to the idea of reaching out to various walks of life, such as a bard who calls out tribes during ancient Celtic times, and putting the idea out there that love and kindness are still essential values for us all. This idea stayed at the forefront of my mind as I started trying out lyrics. The idea of us being all connected is a topic that I have focused on for a while now.
The song is idealistic, but dreaming of a kind world should never come to an end. It’s not that I don’t see the realities of how things are right now, I am fully aware of the atrocities being leveled on other humans and the planet. I was raised during a very promising time, and even if “world peace” and the like are not the current reality, it taught me to never lose sight of the fact that with a positive and healthy growth mindset, wonderful things are possible. It’s my ‘One True Song,’ and I really would love to hear us all sing along!
