Gerrit Walter

Gerrit Walter was born in 1967 and studied history, German language, and literature at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. He’s a self-taught musician and decided to write poetry at 20. Since then, poems and lyrical short prose paved his way. There are publications in selected magazines, primarily as private prints.

His attempts to play twenty-two instruments simultaneously constantly fail but are maintained, as are Polaroid photography and surreal-abstract attempts at painting and drawing.

Since 1992, he has done radio play work, and since 1993, theater work (action theater, plays for classical stages, children’s and youth theater). Since 1995, text work for visual artists has been added. Gerrit extensively performed in concerts and recordings with his Alter Ego Band, THE SONG & DANCE BRIGADE, and as a lecture artist.

I am kindly asked to write something about my musical life, which has now spanned several decades. No one had ever asked me that before. Well, I have been making music since I was 13 years old. My mother taught me how to play the guitar, at least the rudimentary playing she mastered. That was when I was thirteen.

Since then, I’ve been playing the guitar. It’s the instrument I desire in terms of beauty, sound, and challenge. In school, they told me I couldn’t sing. I did it anyway.
