A Bittersweet Experience

When I released my first single, ‘Always Time’ as ZEETRICITY!, I found it incredibly moving how many people resonated with the subject matter; for such a personal song to have such an effect reminds me exactly why I began writing music in the first place.

I have always believed that music is the most powerful form of art because it is a constantly evolving medium that takes on various forms. However, its intention always remains the same: to resonate with the listener.

There is a special connection between the creator of the music and the one listening to it, creating a small window of insight into each other’s lives.

Listen to the album while reading the text.

Like so many creators, I began writing music as a teenager. Influenced by artists such as Silverchair, I was inspired to take guitar more seriously, resulting in my first band, ‘The Reign,’ with my friend Michael. Together, we created music that, although derivative of our influences, gave us something to strive towards, which resulted in a fun collection of songs. Michael wrote very amusing lyrics for someone so young, and as we got older, we embraced that element more and more.

Tragically, Michael died when we were in year 11. He was only 16. When I reflect on the material we wrote together, it’s quite a bittersweet experience; hearing this talented young man create his own quirky universe is something very special. I believe Michael’s approach to music was a way for him to connect with people in funny, irreverent ways, which brought him great joy. I’m incredibly proud of who he was and what he accomplished.

In a roundabout way, I suppose I’m saying that the longevity of music will always be special. Irrespective of its origins, the window into an artist’s life will forever be accessible, even if they aren’t here to share that moment with us.

With each single or album I release now, I am constantly pursuing a level of connection between myself and the listener. The bond I feel is so powerful because, as a listener myself, I am constantly reminded that we are all navigating life the best we can, and if music can help, then that is a pretty remarkable thing!

I am forever grateful Michael was in my life. Although he isn’t here to share his story with us, I will always have those moments we captured in the form of the music we created together.

Stay safe, and please remember, we will get through this together!

Love,
Zac
