1% Suckers

Dear Misses

Since 2017, I’ve been the singer and guitarist of the Swiss band Dear Misses, although my first band experience started in 2005 when I was 15. My roots lie in a mountain valley, which is the embodiment of Switzerland: high mountains and deep valleys, a cold blue creek, a lot of snow in winter, green meadows, and Swiss cows during summer. If you don’t believe me, just Google “Muotathal.” It’s old Germanic and means “wild water valley.”

Listen to the song while reading the text.

I guess that is one of the reasons I have always been attracted to nature. That’s why I started my studies in geography at the University of Berne, the Swiss capital after I graduated high school. While I was mainly focused on physical studies, I began to focus more and more on social subjects. This was when I started to grasp that our connection to nature and nature’s relation to us is deeply rooted in cultural and social aspects. The separation of nature and humans is artificial.

I realized that our capitalistic system is not meant to serve the long-term needs of people and nature but rather to benefit a wealthy few. Faced with such understanding, I started to involve these themes in my songs with Dear Misses.

Although a melody always gives me the first inspiration for a new song, it is passionate lyrics that give the song the charisma it needs. Sometimes, I struggle to find an adequate lyrical topic for a new song. Nevertheless, for our latest single, “1% Suckers,” the lyrics came to me easily. What theme goes better with a powerful voice, a fast beat, and catchy guitar rhythms? The unbelievable inequality among us human beings, of course.

The lyrics attempt to show the injustice in our system easily: That 1% of the wealthiest people possess more than 40% of the global assets. It’s outrageous and incredibly unfair! So the title contains the whole message: The ultra-rich suck! I hope you hear the anger and frustration that brought the song the energy it needed.
