My story is the story of an artist who was a little boy with a pocket calculator but now is on a quest to uncover the hidden laws behind music and tell the story of his country at war.
Listen to the album while reading the text.
It all started with a book about popular mathematics I had as a kid. One of the stories there was about Pythagoreans. Pythagoreans believed that every number had its own meaning and magic. Furthermore, Pythagoreans believed that you can describe any natural process by numbers and rations between them. The same applied to music: some ratios were explicitly pleasant, and some were consonant.
Such stories mesmerized me, and I spent much time goofing around with a pocket calculator, studying different numbers and trying to find connections between them.
You can think of me as a STEM person, but art is also my passion. I mostly enjoyed working with text, but I also loved music, just as we all dream of becoming rock stars in our teens.
Although things turned out differently, and I’ve pursued a career in software engineering, my passions have never faded away: I wanted to understand how music works and why I loved the music I enjoy.
I’ve chosen Supercollider as a tool for this. From my experience, programming is a great practice for internalizing steps beyond things we take for granted. So, to really understand music, I’ve decided to program it with a dedicated language!
I jumped off with fulfilling all my childhood passions. My album “Fractions” was an attempt to do exactly what Pythagoreans would do: encode different digits in music. It sounded unusual, but it satisfied my inner “what would it be if…” Over time, I’ve programmed more and more stuff, but I never cared to promote it since I had just enough fun creating it.
Things, however, changed when the Russian full-scale invasion started. I won’t dive into details about war since you either witnessed it and understand it or can’t ever understand it, no matter how much you try. I sincerely hope that you’ll never understand what war is.
War made me reconsider my attitude towards promoting my works since every bit of attention now is a chance to tell the story of Ukraine and urge people to take a stance to help it fight this brutal and unprovoked aggression.
So, I’ve made a couple of works highlighting ongoing Russian aggression, both in music and text. And now, I’ve decided to share my story here.
That’s why, to conclude, I urge you to support Ukraine via volunteer funds and to urge your local politicians to provide more support to Ukraine since Russia will not stop here, just as it didn’t stop for the last 30 years, claiming more and more land – fueled by being unpunished for its misdeeds.
