How I Started as a Solo Artist

Raging Flowers

Hi, I’m Raging Flowers, a singer-songwriter-producer from Auckland, New Zealand. My primary instrument is the electric guitar. I make jazzy self-help indie pop that celebrates the diversity of feelings. My music is about truthfulness, exploration, and hope.

My music career has had an unusual start. I’ve been a long-time music learner, but I decided to pursue a career in tech. I studied Computer Science and had a career as a Software Engineer. I worked for some of the top software companies in New Zealand. I was a star Software Engineer in various fields, including music, blockchain, and AI. Back in my programming days, my ambition was to run a small business of my own.

I wanted to build a small software business that’s manageable by myself. Over five years, I built and launched my software, MusoPipe, a music player for learning music, while working part-time as a Software Engineer. At the same time, I started to take my Muay Thai (kickboxing) training more seriously. I competed professionally and became a popular coach for kids and beginners at my gym, Wimbledon Muay Thai. It was unsurprising to my doctor that I got severely burnt out from the work pressure and the intense training. I had to take a good break to care for my body and mind.

The Artist’s Way

With a hyperactive mind, I needed a focus. I came across Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way, which encouraged me to connect with my creativity. It was difficult for me to break out of the habit of high productivity and rational thinking, but with the help of therapists, I learned to listen to my feelings. I read a lot and went for long walks. I painted and played with clay. Very slowly, I learned to relax and have fun. As I got to know my feelings, especially my fears, I became braver, too.

One day, I decided to try taking singing lessons. I nervously contacted the singer-songwriter and vocal coach, Jennifer K Austin, whom I found online. I told her I had no experience in singing but wanted to learn. I was lucky that I found such an encouraging coach. She guided me in singing and then encouraged me to try songwriting. It turned out I love songwriting, and I’m pretty good at it.

While I worked in tech, I bought all the recording gear I needed to make music, thinking it’d be cool if I made music one day. I finally decided to try my hands at it. I’m glad to share that my music’s getting some encouraging early feedback!

Three of the songs on my debut EP are being played by New Zealand radio stations. On April 2, 2024, “Can Someone I Love Love Me Please” made number 3 on the Te Ahi Top 10 chart by RDU 98.5 FM, a radio station in Christchurch, New Zealand. My song, “Procrastination,” is signed to the Australian sync licensing agency Midnight Choir. On April 11, 2024, “I Thought I’ve Let Go of You” was playlisted by the radio station in Singapore, 97.3FM: Blasts That Last.

I’m currently preparing for a live-to-air show at my local radio station, EastFM. I’m excited about my music journey. I wish that my music can help others get through a tough day or put a big smile on people’s faces.
