My first solo cassette was recorded in 1998. It was awful. I had some good ideas for a kid, but no talent at all, maybe except a knack for lyrics, and a bit of a gift for classical guitar and bass, definitely not for singing. I was also interested in much different music than most people my age in Poland back then. That’s why it took 4 years to form my first band in 2002. To take the shortcut, it took 9 more years to release my studio debut album “Second Hand Man”. In 2012, I started Sauer Adler, my second real band. And to take the shortcut again, in 2022, I formed Psychedelic Mayhem, and in 2024, I formed Bezkwit. Along the way, I also jammed, recorded, played, composed, and improvised whenever and wherever possible, with whoever was available at the time. That, through many shortcuts, takes us directly into the once-very-futuristic year 2026 (certainly around 1998).
Third Eye Men.
In 2026, I finally met some interesting musicians again here in my city of Poznań, Poland – Jarrko (drums) and Jeremy (keyboards). And so, 15 years after the title song from “Second Hand Man” was recorded in Andrzej Mikołajczak’s A.Mix Studio, we jammed on this theme together.
The recording you hear is the second time we ever played together. I find it amazing to discover such chemistry on the first or second meeting. This is more than coincidence or talent – this is magic. Something just clicked and stayed there, and was captured live and raw as it happened.
Third Eye Men from that 13th Floor Elevators song come to mind. And they really „can yo-yo where they will” if the time and spirit are right.
Right People.
I remember forming my first band, and later bands, and everyone suddenly wanted a “new name”. Nobody wanted to play with me under the “A.J. Kaufmann” or “Adam Majdecki-Janicki” banner. Maybe I was too small a fish, maybe those people had bigger egos than I did. Maybe they didn’t really appreciate who they were playing with. Anyway, those people were wrong. Of course, it’s only a matter of experience and opinion. And behavior. I finally found the right people in Jarrko and Jeremy, and right now, with another jam, we are looking for a bass player.
Or hey, maybe our music is wrong? Maybe we’re all clowns. Who cares? We are too experienced and too old to care. We have fun playing together and hope the listeners do too.
One Nation, One Voice.
We also recorded two videos at our last rehearsal. I wrote “Sundowner” back in 2002 in the Górczyn high rise. This song had many incarnations and versions, and I most notably played it with Tall Yodas as “Malawi’n’Roll”. This short video was meant as a live “teaser,” so it cuts short. But it already gives an idea of the theme, lyrics, and hippie mood.
The other track from that era is „We Are Smoke,” which I wrote for voice and distorted bass in 2001. The year of the Space Odyssey. It felt so good playing it with Jarkko and Jeremy! Awesome energy. This is captured here in its entirety.
The Need for Names and Products.
I always perceived music as one of the highest forms of art, not as a product. But hey, physical albums (and I released some) are products, whether I like it or not. We are hoping to record a full album soon together and look for a good independent label to release it on vinyl. We will, of course, play gigs. But then, you have to name us. What should be the name? Maybe finally A.J. Kaufmann? If not, you can call us Dead Warlocks or The 13th Tribe. I don’t care.
