A Sort of Musical Debris in the Form of Eight Tracks

It all started for me in the mid-2000s as a pre-adolescent who had fallen in love with hip-hop culture in all its forms. After a few attempts at beatmaking throughout my teens, life eventually led me to cinema, visual arts, and abstract painting.

But the enthusiasm for (making) music never left—hence the debris EP. This project is the result of six months of experimenting with synths and plugins. It is a sort of musical debris in the form of eight tracks inspired by minimalism, time perception, and the soundscapes of daily life.

Listen to the album while reading the text.

Far from the boom-bap hip-hop tracks that I used to listen to as a teen (and still do), I wanted to explore ambient and electronica-influenced sounds. I imagined these songs as the soundtrack of different moments of my everyday life: feeling overwhelmed and claustrophobic in a modern city, losing track of time, and feeling that everything moves past you at 100km/h.

Despite using a different approach for each track, every single one feels like it’s part of the whole—or at least that was the goal. Sometimes, I would start with a very short and obscure sample that I would modify until it almost became unrecognizable. For other tracks, I started with very basic chord progressions to set the tone for the rhythmic session.

When it comes to the production of the ep, I believe that the lack of equipment and the time constraints I set on myself helped boost my creativity and problem-solving, having to figure things out on the fly. I also believe that living in a particular city like Paris heavily inspired the mood of the ep. In a way, I tried to translate the feeling I have walking these streets into sounds, which is most evident on the tracks “intra venoso” and “inez esperanza”.

Overall, this was a very introspective and personal project, but I hope someone else can relate to it and hopefully appreciate these tracks as much as I enjoyed making them.
