We Don’t Play the Music Industry Game

Sonic Ctrl

We believe in following our whims and passions through music as our creative outlet. We are accountable to no one but ourselves and use ‘Sonic Ctrl’ as our platform to indulge our feelings and emotions, whether funny or serious. We are going wherever our musical muse takes us. For us, it’s not a contradiction to write an insanely catchy pop-punk song and next write a groovy emotional tune because they all come from our personal experiences, outlooks, and attitudes. Likened to someone listening to Ray Charles at one moment but blasting The Chats the next.

Sonic Ctrl, as a creative entity, exists in many forms. We enjoy reworking our song styles from acoustic duo to loud-ass rock. Whatever we see fit and whatever the story requires. There are no rules except to keep everything fun and interesting. Kelly is the primary voice you hear, with Chris backing things up a bit, and keeping us in check is Tim with the backbeat. Other creatives join from time to time. All band members contribute to the songwriting, and each individual brings divergent influences into the equation.

Our latest single, ‘Temporary,’ is a story we’ve been telling for a while. That feeling of longing for a place to call home or the anxiety that comes from being surrounded by unfamiliar places or people. For each of us, that journey is different, but we can all relate. We’ve been crafting this song since 2019, and it always gets a positive emotional response when played live. I’m sure the fact that we’ve poured our hearts into this tune comes across as we perform on stage.

We’ve recorded the basic tracks here in Sydney with Matt Stewart at A Sharp Studios, which provided the solid foundation. Over time, we’ve recorded and added bits ourselves, with the final mix of this song being our best production to date. Something Sonic Ctrl is immensely proud of. It was ours. Now, we get to share it with you.

We are musicians, but we don’t play the music industry game. ‘Ctrl’ (or ‘Control’) is not only in our name but something we believe in. We are doing as much as we can ourselves. Creating what we create, albeit silly, serious, or scary, is still paired with our prerogative of writing good songs and telling a meaningful story. Playing within all kinds of musical styles with zero limitations brings us joy. You will never hear us utter the words “that song doesn’t fit with our image” because our image is as complex as anyone’s.

We’ve created an eclectic body of work that we’re immensely proud of. Dig around in our discography, and you’ll find something that resonates with you.

  1. This song, “Temporary”, sounds bright, breezy and authentically Australian. Sonic Ctrl have a light and funky touch, the singer Kelly an outstanding voice, which she puts to its limits on occasion throughout the song. Reminded me of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, or some of the artists on this Australian Christmas album by Dinosaur City (Various Artists): https://dinosaurcityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/dcr-mixtape-a-christmas-compilation
