You may know one of those songs, that no matter how many times you hear it, it’ll just send emotions running though your entire body. Whether that’s sadness, happiness, guilt, joy, or even songs that surprise you with a twist, are always the best kinds of songs. In this blog, I will be talking about a song that gives off happy and sad vibes, and what it’s about – directly from the composer of said song. Keep reading to find out!

Listen to the EP while reading the text.

Hello, My name is Maxwell Mandell and I am a musical artist that is about to release a new EP, “Next To You.” This EP means a lot to me for many reasons, but it means more to me because of it’s sentimental value. Let me explain. In the past year, I’ve taken up a weird hobby, of helping people through rough patches, but there’s one person who specifically stood out to me, and was a huge inspiration to this EP, especially the song “Next To You.” She is now my best friend, and therefore what the song directly means will remain confidential for personal reasons, but allow me to let you read the lyrics first:

Next To You

The way life can go,
The grip of control,
Dripping through the cracks
‘tween your fingers,
And all that you know,
I’ll be there
standing next to you.

You don’t always ask,
When you’re over tasked,
For help with things you just can’t finish,
And all that you know,
I’ll be there standing next to you.

Holding you so you can stand,
Telling you that “you can”,
No matter what comes your way,
I’m always here to say,
“I’m right here”

Your strength gives me hope,
That’s why I can cope,
People question why all the brightness,
And all that you know,
I’ll be there standing next to you.

You’re learning to rest in my gentle arms,
Remind yourself I don’t mean you harm,
And all that I know,
I’ll be there standing next to you.

Holding you so you can stand,
Telling you that “you can”,
No matter what comes your way,
I’m always here to say,
“I’m right here”

Though the skies
may rarely be blue
and the clouds will cover us
I’m always here to say,
“I’m right here”

Holding you so you can stand,
Telling you that “you can”,
No matter what comes your way,
I’m always here to say,
Holding you so that you can stand,
Telling you that “you can”,
No matter what comes your way,
I’m always here to say,
“I’m right here”

This song holds sentimental value for me since it’s about my (now) best friend who is currently going through rough patches, but is also dedicated to those who are also going through hard times in their life. Now let’s dig into the lyrics:

In the very first line, I state:

“The way life can go, The grip of control, Dripping through the cracks ‘tween your fingers”

I’ve realized that in parts of life, you can’t really control what’s going around you, no matter how much you wish you could. This includes deaths, divorces, break-ups, and other events. The next line is kind of obvious, but I’ll explain it anyways.

“And all that you know, I’ll be there, standing next to you.”

This line simply is saying that if anything happens, I’m here to support you along the way or help in any way that I can. In the second verse, the lyrics say:

“Your strength gives me hope, That’s why I can cope…”

I love helping people going through hard times, especially when it seems that they are benefitting from it. This is basically a hobby that I have when I’m bored, just helping people getting through troubling times. I like to see people happy, not upset or disappointed.

“You’re learning to rest in my gentle arms, Remind yourself I don’t mean you harm”

Initially, people aren’t that comfortable opening up to others, but once they can trust the other person, they can feel relaxed and more comfortable with expressing their feelings.

For the Bridge of the song, it changes keys from B major to G sharp minor. This was to give it more of a dramatic feeling, that was inspired by Olivia Swinton’s “Dance With Me.” In the bridge, the lyrics say:

“Though the skies
may rarely be blue
and the clouds will cover us
I’m always here to say,
“I’m right here'”

I realized that life may not be perfect, so I’m always here to help friends when they need it, or really anyone that’s out there listening to my songs and supporting me. I really truly appreciate it. Thanks for reading this blog, and see you soon.

The full EP will be coming out on January 27th. Don’t miss it!
