DramaDolls live/exist in Adelaide a small remote city where the best and worst elements exist for creating genuinely original music.
As a singer-songwriter for me, each song is a mini-adventure in self-expression. Typically spanning just a few days from inception to release into the world. That is the reality of it, so my approach is to honor that, and especially resist the temptation to contrive into something artificially grand, or to morph into some sort of a product aimed at securing commercial return.
Recently I read an article on Glorious Noise about the Regrettes. I love that kind of music, but it also always transfers me back to the late 80s, early 90s and the hights of Brit-Pop. One of my favorites of that time was Elastica, with their fresh, alternative understanding of pop music.
Singer and Musician Leila Williams from London found the licensing procedure as an independent musician much too complicated and intransparent. As a consequence, she didn’t license her music to advertisement, TV, films, and gaming for a long time. But she didn’t stop there and started the project The Unsigned Library. It aims to simplify and demystify music licensing and make it fair for independent artists who can’t afford a lawyer. She is now crowdfunding to kickoff her project from musicians to musicians. Our Artist of the Week #23, Sisika, are a four piece from South London, featuring Georgia Duncan on guitar and voice, her sister Katie on keys and voice, David Coughlin on bass and Lucy Katz on drums. Combining close, earthy harmonies with warm guitar, melodic bass lines, minimal synth sounds and subtle drums they create intricate, freely arranged songs with a rootsy soul folk sound.
